{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters dangerous incident with F1 track officials
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson revealed he barely escaped a potentially fatal incident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two safety personnel darted across the track right in his path
The concerning event took place on the third circuit when safety workers were observed on the circuit as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to change his damaged front wing
Racer's Instant Response
Moments later, Racing Bulls driver Lawson spoke to his team engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you witness that? I could have... killed them"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I rejoined with a fresh hard compound tires, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two individuals running across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, honestly, it was so dangerous"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Evidently there's been a communication breakdown somewhere but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a ongoing race track track officials can be authorized to just run across the track in such a way. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some form of reasoning, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Governing Body Reviewing
F1's overseeing organization, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is thoroughly reviewing the events
"Subsequent to a first corner event, track officials was informed that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the governing body
"In the third rotation, safety personnel were informed and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once every vehicle had gone by"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had made a pit stop, the directives to deploy marshals were canceled and a caution signal was raised in that zone"
"We are still investigating what happened following that moment"
