Citizens of Israel Come together to Observe 24 Months Since The October 7 Assault by Hamas

On Tuesday, Israelis will gather across the country to mark the second anniversary of the October 7 assault, during which Hamas-led militants took the lives of approximately 1,200 individuals and took 251 hostages in an attack on Israel's southern areas.

Unofficial Memorials and Gatherings

Community memorials are set to take place in the small kibbutzim of southern Israel where residents were killed or kidnapped, and a sizeable public gathering is planned in Tel Aviv to urge the liberation of the hostages still held from Hamas captivity in Gaza.

The national commemorative service of honoring will take place on the sixteenth of October in Israel’s national cemetery on the hill of Herzl after the religious festival of Simchat Torah.

National Wound and Ongoing Impact

The memory of the collective trauma of the attack two years ago – the most lethal one-day assault in the history of Israel – still looms large throughout the nation. The images of captives still held in Gaza are plastered on public transport stations around the country, and dwellings that were lit on fire by militants as they raided communal settlements remain burned and deserted.

A multitude of those who lived through the incident during the Nova musical event attended a memorial on recent Sunday with ex-captives and the families of victims.

“This dear one would have been 27 years old now. The recollection stays with me as though it happened just moments past,” a grieving parent, who lost his son the young Idan lost his life at the musical gathering, remarked next to a monument showing photographs of those killed.

Ceasefire Hopes

The anniversary has been overshadowed by expectations that the conflict in Gaza could be approaching conclusion. Delegates from the opposing factions met in the nation of Egypt on recent Monday where they started mediated discussions to iron out the terms of the freeing of each abducted individual kept in the territory and the return of nearly 2,000 detainees from Palestine, along with the preliminary retreat of Israeli troops from Gaza.

This set of talks, although not close to an agreement, has sparked greater optimism than any peace efforts following the previous cessation of hostilities fell apart in March's halfway point.

Benjamin Netanyahu has said he expects to reveal the release of hostages “over the next few days”, while Donald Trump has issued an ultimatum to the militants with “complete destruction” if the deal fails to materialize.

Public Pressure

Some commemoration events have been repurposed to protests to call on the administration to conclude negotiations to bring the hostages home and end the war. In a demonstration in the public space for captives in Tel Aviv on the past Saturday evening, relatives demanded the prime minister approve the suggested framework to stop the hostilities in the territory.

Conditions in the Strip

In Gaza, Palestinians are anxiously awaiting to see if a ceasefire comes to fruition. Despite the ex-president's requests that the military cease attacks on the area in anticipation of a captive return, attacks on Gaza are ongoing. The health authority in Gaza stated at least 19 people were died from Israeli strikes in the past day, incorporating two people seeking aid.

Tuesday will also mark the 24-month mark of the commencement of the nation's armed offensive on the Palestinian territory, which has caused material and human destruction to the inhabitants.

More than 67,000 Palestinians have been died and around one hundred seventy thousand have been harmed by Israeli forces in Gaza, according to the Gaza health ministry. No fewer than 460 people have died from starvation in the strip, and the world’s leading authority on food crises has said a mass starvation is occurring in areas of the territory – a product of what most aid agencies say is an blockade by Israel on Gaza. Israel has denied the claim.

A UN commission of inquiry, multiple organizations focused on rights and the international top group of genocide scholars have stated the nation has carried out genocide in Gaza during the last 24 months. Israel has disputed the claim and said its measures are defensive measures.
